Many people are saying that the subwoofer doesn't have enough kick, but I think the problem lies with the positioning of the subwoofer. The manual suggests that you place this woofer at an angle of 45 degrees in a corner of your room. This setting works most of the times but sometimes it doesn't work, I mean if you don't have a square or rectangular room, there is no necessity of placing it in corner. Instead, try this trick, place the subwoofer at any random position in the room, make sure you don't have much furniture ( Temporarily remove the furniture ). Play it at a sufficient volume. Move around at every area of the room, and try to find the spot where your subwoofer sounds the best to you. Now place the subwoofer at this position. Don't worry you won't find this area in the middle of the room :), it has to be somewhere near the wall.
Another important factor is the output of your preamplifier or the receiver. If it is incapable of producing the frequency range where you have good bass, like 20-40Hz, how can you expect the subwoofer to perform well.

Rating - Great subwoofer for under $100
Have been using this subwoofer(Yamaha YST-SW216BL) for 3 weeks now and I must say this is a very good value. Yes it is true that one of these speakers will not provide enough "kick" for a large open room such as a great room,but in my 15x12 TV room and paired with Soney book shelf speakers,the sub produces plenty of full rich base and shakes the room.
If your room isnt huge,one of these will probably work very well.

I don't know about those other people but this sub is pretty kick a$$. The bass that it puts out is pretty impressive. I hooked it up to my Onkyo receiver and away I went! 300 was pretty awesome. With the other people who said it wasn't powerful enough...the sub is plenty powerful enough, you just need to have the amp/receiver that puts out power to run it. Not enough power definitely distorts the sound quality and make it seem like there isn't enough oommphh.
