Rating  - Ugly but it sounds okay.
This stereo has lot's of power but lacks the ability to deliver details of the original music. It's loud but not really Hi Fi. The negative is it is really ugly! It would be good for a kid but not an adults home. Once again, Sony no longer cares about quality. They are too busy making video games. Try another brand.

Rating - Great Stereo
I bought this for my 9-year old son (he paid for it) who wanted an inexpensive shelf stereo. The Sony CMTBX1 really fit the bill. This stereo sounds much better than you'd expect from the price or the speaker dimensions. Good sound from either the CD player or the FM tuner. Also the MP3 input. Highly recommended. We did look at these at local stores, but found Amazon to be a better price. Amazon's shipping was very fast as well.
Rating  - Sound decision
I recently bought this product after much deliberation, looking at units by Panasonic and Philips. First, the look and feel showed some substance as opposed to the other units that were more "plasticky". Second, the sound quality seemed more vibrant. Third, the features,size/CD/MP3/Aux In/FM-AM presets and timer all played a role in the decision. I can play the radio(tuner)or CD, or hook up my Zune or my Mini-disc player, set the timer and go to sleep, confident it will turn off in 30-90mins which I set on the remote. The volume is perfectly adequate for a bedroom, office or the like. It is a very good micro-component system.
I only wish the speaker cable was longer so I could straddle a queen sized bed for better stereo separation.
