Rating - Couldn't hold speaker
I had the same problem already noted. These mounts were not strong enough to hold up the 7 lbs. 1000 speakers. Even though the mount is designed to hold up to 8 lbs., the ball joint couldn't keep the weight up and the speaker will sag to the floor. They attach to the wall securely but the rotating pivot will not hold up straight.
Rating - Poorly designed mounts sorry to say
Purchased these mounts to go with Def Tech Promonitor 1000 speakers (amazing speakers by the way !!!). I figured why mess with anything but mounts specifically made for their own product. You would think the labs at Def Tech would have put the mounts through all sorts of tests and different mounting conditions before putting a less than satisfactory product on the market. The mounts are rated upto 8 Lbs, the speakers weigh 7 Lbs each. Now I understand that's getting close to the limit, but it is still within the limit. Most products are almost always rated well below their actual capacity for safety reasons. So in essence, a 7 Lb speaker really isn't pushing the limit. Once installed and speaker mounted on the wall, the ball clinching mechanism failed to hold the weight of the speaker in place. Regardless of how tight you turn the clinching ring, the weight of the speaker would cause the ball to slide in the socket in the direction of gravity. If you happen to be mounting onto drywall and not a stud, attempts at overtightening the clinching ring with a monkey rench will create enough torque to loosen the anchors in the drywall, creating a situation for disaster for your expensive investment. Hence the security loop ! As far as I know, Def Tech doesn't make any mounts rated more than 8 Lbs in this design. They might work better for the lighter Promonitor 600's & 800's, but I don't suggest them for the 1000's. I haven't had a chance to try other brands of mounts yet, but from what I've read so far, the Omnimount 20 might be my best option. It too is a ball and socket design, but rated for upto 20 Ibs and has teeth that clinch into the ball to secure it in place. I've read reviews with people having similar problems even with this mount, but again they were using speakers that weighed towards the uperlimit of the mounts i.e. 16 Lbs. I'm beginning to think one should take the weight of your speaker multiply by 2 and get a mount that is rated for that weight, not the actualy weight of the speaker.Good luck, turn up the base and hope to God the vibration doesn't knock the speaker off your wall mount ! And don't forget to use the security loop ! Do you think theDefinitive Technology Pro-Mount 80 Articulating Wall Brackets (Pair, Black) security loop is a hidden message about how much the manufacturer trusts their own product ? LOL !
